Culture For Peace : CIOFF® Indonesia Peacekeeping Through Cultural Mission



The art and culture lovers increasingly crowded the Galeri Indonesia Kaya, Grand Indonesia Shopping Town, Jakarta, Saturday (14/11). As if they didn't want to miss, the audience vying to be able to watch the show and all the seats were filled well before the event starts. Shortly the performances that they have been waiting for, 'Culture for Peace' organized by CIOFF® Indonesia will soon be opened. 

In commemoration of the 45th anniversary of CIOFF® and UNESCO 70th, non-profit organizations and international culture under UNESCO, CIOFF® Indonesia held a show entitled 'Culture for Peace'. The event was held within the framework of a mission that the world peace can be achieved through culture. Culture is an effective language to unite the perspectives of different nations. It is an honor for CIOFF® Indonesia whom entrusted by UNESCO to cooperate with Galeri Indonesia Kaya, Grand Indonesia Shopping Town in the execution of its birthday.

"Cinta Budaya, Cinta Indonesia! (Love Culture, Love Indonesia!)" are the words that  MC said as a sign that 'Culture for Peace' has been officially opened, accompanied by loud applause from the art lovers who have been present. President of CIOFF® Indonesia, Said Rachmat also introduced the organization that has stood since August 10, 1981. Then followed with a history video of CIOFF® Indonesia in the development of national art and cultural mission activities in international level.

"We (Indonesia) want to show the support, collaboration, and friendship with UNESCO through the 38th Session of the UNESCO General Conference, in Paris. CIOFF® officially appointed as an associate partner of UNESCO," said Said Rachmat."

As one of the biggest cultural organizations in the world, he continued, CIOFF® maintain the culture of each country that already amounted to 112 countries around the world by carry out activities that promoting the ancestral activities such as dance, music, games, clothes and much more. In addition, CIOFF® also helps UNESCO's programs, and providing support to all members of CIOFF®, as well as to maintain peace through cultural mission between nations. As a non-profit organization under UNESCO, the United Nations in the field of Indonesian culture, CIOFF® Indonesia continues to send at least 15 groups each year to represent Indonesia in various festivals and competitions in foreign countries.

'Culture for Peace' exhibition featuring several archipelago dances like Bubuka dance which is the mix of Sundanese and Balinese culture, the energetic Topeng dance and Greget Jawara from DKI Jakarta, and the popular the dance of thousand hands,  Saman dance from Aceh that wowed the audience. It also presents the collaboration of contemporary music which sung by V1MAST together with CIOFF® Indonesia musicians. With a song called 'Yogyakarta' and 'Kurikulum Hatimu' the creation of Viza Mahasa, closed the event with a festive. Through this event, CIOFF® Indonesia is expect to bring Indonesian culture to the next generation. With structured in creative way to made the culture is not considered as a timeless thing anymore.

"I fully support this event, especially because it coincided with the anniversary of  CIOFF® and UNESCO. Hopefully CIOFF® Indonesia always be able to contribute well in keeping the Intangible Cultural Heritage. I am proud of the nation achievements in the eyes of the world. Congratulations to all children of Indonesia!," said Said Rachmat.

CIOFF® AWARDED THE UNESCO ASSOCIATE PARTNER STATUS AS NGO AT THE 38TH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF UNESCO IN PARIS

We are extremely proud to announce that at the 38th General Assembly of UNESCO in Paris (3rd-18th November) CIOFF® has been awarded the UNESCO associate partner status as NGO, being one of the only three NGOs, who received the associate status in 2015.

Since its foundation in 1945, UNESCO has sought to collaborate with NGOs, which are fundamental civil society partners for the implementation of the Organization’s activities and programmes. Over the years, UNESCO has built up a valuable network of cooperation with NGOs having an expertise in its fields of competence, i.e. education, science, social and human sciences, culture, communication and information. Currently, UNESCO is enjoying official partnerships with 373 international NGOs and 24 foundations and similar institutions, only around 40 of which have associate status and all the others consultative status. 


This recognition of CIOFF® by UNESCO reflects the new level of cooperation with CIOFF® in providing a valuable partnership to UNESCO in recent years, having made regular major substantial contributions to framing UNESCO’s objectives and implementing its programmes in the field of safeguarding and promoting the World intangible cultural heritage. CIOFF® becomes the only organisation working in the field of ICH to receive associate partnership status of UNESCO.

What that means for CIOFF® is:

  • Visibility – an immense chance to promote the work and activities of CIOFF® by both CIOFF® International and the National Sections
  • Opportunity to develop and implement new exciting programmes and projects with the support of UNESCO 
  • Responsibility- to maintain the high level of engagement with UNESCO as an associate partner, constantly strengthening CIOFF® organisation on national and international levels and delivering effective programmes and projects. 

This extremely important announcement comes at a time when CIOFF® is preparing for its flagship event - the 5th CIOFF® World Folkloriada, which will take place in Zacatecas, Mexico in August 2016, with participation of over 2500 dancers and musicians representing more then 70 countries of the World. Founded in 1970, CIOFF® is now represented in 112 different countries in which there are more than thirty thousand folklore dance and music groups and folk arts organizations. Today CIOFF ® globally coordinates over 300 annual international folklore and folk arts festivals, uniting thousands of volunteers around the world with its mission to encourage cultural exchange in order to promote a growing spirit of friendship and peace.
